Columbia "AJ"

Third issue
1904 - original price $22.50

This AJ was the Third style of the small well designed  "Portable Music"
Series started in 1901. this machine was offered in dark quarter sawn oak,
single spring motor and a 16" horn.
The tonearm assembly is very ornate,
as were most of the Columbia
Machines. With the "Analyzing" reproducer and the newly introduced brass elbow.

This Machine is offered "As found", with a few exceptions.
The case seems to be refinished, but done very well, The tonearm
and support were tarnished and I burnished them bright again.
The elbow and reproducer are original as best I can tell, the
horn is reproduction, and the crank maybe. We repaired the
reproducer and cleaned the motor, the brass governor weights
are a replacement for badly oxidized lead weights.

This is a great little machine and is a very good representative of
the "front mount" type of disc player. It runs very well and will play
through a 10" record very easily.

-A WORD ABOUT REPRODUCED HORNS -
We all would like to find that proverbial mint machine in
Aunt Tilly's closet. Early collectors found these machines
and were able to buy them cheaply. We are now finding the
machines that need substantial work. The horns usually are
rusty (often through the metal), they are dented, from
small dings to large folds. and where used as funnels for fuel
and other things.
To restore an original takes a lot of skill and work, and when
you get through you have a dimpled, wavy, repainted less than
correct original that I prefer not to put on my machines as
representing what the makers and skilled workers made.
The Reproduced horns we sell and use are made exactly like
the originals, less all the rust, scratches, dents and high prices.

The Price for this exceptional machine that has been gone through and needs
nothing else but to show off and enjoy is
